I’m vegetarian and traveling, and one of my favorite things is to eat at great vegetarian restuarants. Is there a comprehensive guide to veggie restuarants online?

Yes – HappyCow. We’ve found great restaurants in several cities through it.

my family is celiac so i’m looking for a gluten free restaurent guide that help us when we want to eat out. please help.

Hi Shawna,
You can try www.specialgourmets.com
It is a free guide (community driven) of restaurants/hotels/shops for people with celiac disease (and other food allergies). It has just been launched a couple of months ago, but has currently more than 5000 places. The easiest way to find places/restaurants is to interact with the map (select ‘gluten-free’ and zoom in to the region you want). Alternatively you can try typing the name of the city in the search box (typing toronto, for example, will give you now 37 results – you can click the map markers or click the ‘see results as a list’ link). Hope it helps!

Good Mac Software to design a menu for restaurant?

I need a good program to design a menu page for a restaurant. Some names would be nice and make sure it is quite easy to use because I’m not a professional.

Assuming you are implying "FREE", a Restaurant Menu is nothing more than a multi-page document.

If it only contains text, Open Office 3 is all you’ll likely need. The trick is to use a Table so the Description appears on the left side of the page, and the price appears on the right side of the page.

If you want to include graphics, Scribus is a Desktop Publishing app that can do this kind of thing way better than a Word Processor.

And, the most important consideration is how the menu will be printed. A one page ‘Placemat" Menu is way different than a 3-page double-sided Menu. Will you be printing these yourself, or do you plan to have a local printing shop do the job, and maybe laminate the finished menus?

If so, talk to the print shop owner, before you choose either. They can tell you what software they prefer, as well as tons of great tips to make your job easier.

What is the best route to take to become a restaurant manager?

I would like to get into the restaurant business. My resume shows two years of college, 4 years of waiting tables/bartending, and 12 years of self employment(non-restaurant related).I really don’t want to start out as waiter and work my way up. What is my best approach to applying for a restaurant manager position? Do they hire outsiders w/out prior restaurant management exp.?

Just looking to see if anyone has experiences with this or maybe give me some tips (so to speak).

Thanks
Jon

You don’t mention which field your degree is in. If it is in business, that should qualify you to apply for and get assistant manager’s positions at any of the casual dining restaurants (i.e., Ruby Tuesday’s, Applebees, Outback). While not the most glamorous or high-paying of jobs, a few years should give you the overall experience necessary to run a more targeted restaurant (either your own or as a manager).

I would also suggest returning to school part-time to finish off your degree – preferably in either business or culinary arts. If business, try for a hospitality/hotel-motel degree.
